45/100 'Today we are writing axe-poems'

We are too late brothers.
But I think it was a thousand winters ago
Man with small imagination
Deprived poor sailors of silver.
Today we are writing axe-poems
Longer-lasting than any yellow ore.

[from ‘Crusaders in Orkahowe’, George Mackay Brown Following a lark]
